Featured video candidates

Featured videos logo square.svg

Featured video candidates are videos that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Wikimedia Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured videos.

Old candidates for Featured videos are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured videos:

2019 and current month.

NominatingEdit

Guidelines for nominatorsEdit

Featured video tools:

Featured video criteriaEdit

The following characteristics should be considered for nominating video:

  • File format: Video is compressed using Theora or Webm, for digital videos is at least 1280x720 pixels or equivalent, for older videos is at least 640x480 pixels.
  • Stable image: Video is not excessively shaky and appears to have been shot using a tripod or other stabilizing device.
  • Composition and camera movement: The style of these videos are intended to be simple and clean. No quick zooms or handheld walk-throughs. Any movement within the frame (panning, tilting, or zooming) should be done slowly so that the viewer is able to focus on the detail of the images.
  • Visual clarity of subject: Main subject of the video as well as specific shots should be in-focus and well lit (not over or under exposed). Compression quality should also be considered, with the video appearing to be clear and free of pixelated video that may be the result of choosing a low compression quality.
  • Highly illustrative: The video should have a focus and clearly represent a characteristic of the subject.
  • Free of distractions: Video does not contain noise or images that distract viewer from primary subject.
  • Color: Should not be over or under saturated.
  • Audio: If there is narration or relevant ambient noise, it should be at a consistent level throughout the duration of the video. Captions in the video's original language are recommended, but not required.

See Category:Featured videos for previously Featured videos.

Adding a new nominationEdit

If you believe that you have found or created an video that could be considered valuable, with appropriate video description and licensing, then do the following.

Step 1: copy the video name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured video candidates/File:Your video filename.ogg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button.

All single files:

For renominations, simply add /2 after the filename. For example, Commons:Featured video candidates/File:Foo.ogg/2

All set nomination pages should begin "Commons:Featured video candidates/Set/", e.g. "Commons:Featured video candidates/Set/My Nomination".

Step 2: follow the instructions on the page that you are taken to, and save that page.

Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:

Recommended: Please add a category from the list at FV.

VotingEdit

Editors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 50 edits can vote. Everybody can vote for his/her own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed.

You may use the following templates:

  • Support (Symbol support vote.svg Support),
  • Oppose (Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose),
  • Neutral (Symbol neutral vote.svg Neutral),
  • Comment (Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment),
  • Info (Pictogram voting info.svg Info),
  • Question (Pictogram-voting-question.svg Question),
  • Request (Pictogram voting question-blue.svg Request).

You may indicate that the video has no chance of success with the template reason - ~~~~, where reason explains why the video is clearly unacceptable as an FV. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator.

A well-written review helps participants (creators, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a video. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above.

Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:

  • No reason
  • "I don't like it" and other empty assessments
  • "You can do better" and other criticisms of the author/nominator rather than the video

Remember also to put your signature (~~~~).

Featured video delisting candidatesEdit

Over time, featured video standards change. It may be decided that for some videos which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing a video which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured video. For these, vote:

Text to use Displays as Meaning
Keep Symbol keep vote.svg Keep It deserves to remain a featured video
Delist Symbol oppose vote.svg Delist It does not deserve to be a featured video anymore.

This can also be used for cases in which a previous version of a video was promoted to FV, but a newer version of the video has been uploaded and is believed to be superior to the old version, e.g. a newly uploaded version of a video that is in lossless compression. In particular, it is not intended for replacing older videos of a particular subject with newer recordings of the same subject, or in any other case where the current FV and the proposed replacement are essentially different videos. For these nominations, vote:

Text to use Displays as Meaning
Keep Symbol keep vote.svg Keep Do not replace the old video with the new video as an FV.
Delistandreplace Symbol redirect vote.svg Delist and replace Replace the current FV with the proposed replacement.

If you believe that some video no longer meets the criteria for an FV, you can nominate it for delisting, copying the video name into this box, after the text already present in the box:

In the new delisting nomination page just created you should include:

  • Information on the origin of the video (creator, uploader);
  • A link to the original FV nomination (it will appear under "Links" on the video description page);
  • Your reasons for nominating the video and your username.

After that, you should manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list.

As a courtesy, leave an informative note on the talk page(s) of the original creator, uploader(s), and nominator with a link to the delisting candidate.

Above all, be politeEdit

Please don't forget that the video you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care.

Happy judging… and remember... all rules can be broken.

  •   Strong support Not that long ago I mentioned that I love ultra-long film takes that last a whole minute or even far longer and thus give one a chance to look around at all the wayside details and slow movements one would otherwise miss. Well this is definitely to my liking. A dreamy flight into the top right corner of this particular Mandelbox, twisting and turning atween elongated alien structures and delving down into some twohundredfold or more magnified recesses. A magnificent, almost kaleidoscopic smooth transition to a subminiature ethereal world and back. My respect and admiration. I was thoroughly captivated throughout the whole 20+ minutes! -- Franz van Duns (talk) 13:03, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

  •   Support While I would prefer a video that is less shaky, I think that this video has high educational value and is relatively rare to find with an open license and fairly good quality. There is sound included in the video. ↠Pine () 02:29, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
  •   Support Yes, an elegant, captivating, and audibly eery take. I highly appreciate that the sequence continues until the whale's body has almost disappeared from sight with only its fluke driving it downward into the abyss. The residual jerky movements are IMHO unavoidable as the photographer is submerged and thus bar any foothold to stabilize himself and/or the camera. I thus agree with User:Pine about the relative rarity of underwater sequences and the correspondingly high educational value, especially in combination with these sounds taken, I assume, by hydrophone. More, please. -- Franz van Duns (talk) 13:18, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

  • @Bald white guy: It would be best for you to make the edit, but if you don't have the software this is easy enough for me to do if you like. — Rhododendrites talk |  20:52, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
  • @Rhododendrites: Thanks. Sorry - I'd been caught up with other things. I tried making the edit but was unable to upload as new version of same file due to filesize and having to go thru Video2Commons. I tried redirecting this nomination to the edited version, but I think might have just messed up the existing nomination and need to resubmit. Edit fades after the first dragon leaves. Leaving is consistent with behaviour IMHO as generally one of them needs to withdraw from the other's space. Bald white guy (talk) 06:11, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

Delisting candidatesEdit

Closing a featured video promotion requestEdit

The botEdit

Note that the description below is for manual closure, this is mostly not needed anymore as there exists a bot (FVCBot) that counts the votes and handles the process below. However after the bot has counted the votes a manual review step is used to make sure the count is correct before the bot again picks up the work.

Manual procedureEdit

Any experienced user may close requests.

  1. In Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate video, then [edit].
    Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)

    (for example see Commons:Featured video candidates/File:Tverskaya Street in Moscow, Russia (May 1896).webm). See also FVC-results-reviewed.
  2. Also edit the title of the candidate video template and add after the video tag
    featured or not featured
    For example:
    === :File:XXXXX.jpg ===
    becomes
    === :File:XXXXX.jpg, featured ===
  3. Save your edit.
  4. If it is featured:
    • Add the video to the list of the four most recently featured videos of an appropriate category of Commons:Featured videos, list as the first one and delete the last one, so that the number is four again.
    • Also add the video to an appropriate subpage of Commons:Featured videos, list. Click on the most appropriate link beneath where you just added it as one of the four videos.
    • Add the template to the video description page.
      • If it was an alternative video, use the subpage/com-nom parameter: For example, if File:Foo.jpg was promoted at Commons:Featured video candidates/File:Bar.jpg, use
      • If the video is already featured on another wikipedia, just add featured=1 to the Assessments template. For instance becomes
      • Add the video to the chronological list of featured videos. Put it in the gallery using this format: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created by xxxxx, uploaded by xxxxx, nominated by xxxxx
      • The # should be replaced by 1 for the first video nominated that month, and counts up after that. Have a look at the other noms on that page for examples.
      • You may simplify this if multiple things were done by the same user. E.g.: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created, uploaded, and nominated by xxxxx
    • Add == FP promotion ==
      File:XXXXX.jpg to the Talk Page of the nominator.
  5. As the last step (whether the video is featured or not; including FPXed, FPDed and withdrawn nominations), open Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you've just finished closing. It will be of the form:

    Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured video candidates/Log/September 2019), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.

Closing a delisting requestEdit

  1. In Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate video, then [edit].
    Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
    Result: x delist, x keep, x neutral => /not/ delisted. ~~~~
    (for example see Commons:Featured video candidates/removal/video:Astrolabe-Persian-18C.jpg)
  2. Also edit the title of the delisting candidate video template and add after the video tag
    delisted or not delisted
    For example:
    === :File:XXXXX.jpg === becomes === :File:XXXXX.jpg, delisted ===
  3. Move the actual template from Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list to the bottom of the actual month page on Commons:Featured video candidates/Log/September 2019.
  4. If the outcome was not delisted, stop here. If it is delisted:
    1. Remove the video from Commons:Featured videos, list and any subpages.
    2. Replace the template Featured video on the video description page by Delisted video. If using the Assessments template, change featured=1 to featured=2 (do not change anything related to its status in other featured video processes). Also, remove the video from all categories like Featured videos of ....
    3. Add a delisting-comment to the original entry in chronological list of featured videos in bold-face, e. g. delisted 2007-07-19 (1-6) with (1-6) meaning 1 keep and 6 delist votes (change as appropriate). The video in the gallery is not removed.
  5. If this is a Delist and Replace, the delisting and promotion must both be done manually. To do the promotion, follow the steps in the above section. Note that the assessment tag on the file page and the promotion tag on the nominator's talk page won't pick up the /replace subpage that these nominations use.

Archiving a withdrawn nominationEdit

  1. In Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate video, then [edit].
    In the purpose that the FVCBot will not mark withdrawn nominations with a "to be reviewed" template and put them in Category:Featured video candidates awaiting closure review just like if they were on the usual list, put the following "no" template:

  2. Also edit the title of the candidate video template and add after the video tag
    not featured
    For example:
    === :File:XXXXX.jpg ===
    becomes
    === :File:XXXXX.jpg, not featured ===
  3. Save your edit.
  4. Open Commons:Featured video candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination. It will be of the form:

    Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured video candidates/Log/September 2019), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
