on. AMiile the btmgalows we oc-cupied were not elaborate in their appointments theyhad an atmosphere of distinction which our previoushumble dwellings lacked. Especially the atmosphere.However, after repeated housecleanings, and we weresome little housecleaners, the pig-pens, cow-barns, dog-hotises and chicken coops retained only their usefulfeatures, and w-e finally had less than a thousand rea-sons for boiling oiu shimmies. The busy town of Noyen was a daily and nightlysource of entertainment. Varying the monotony ofarmy chow by going down to the Cafe de Botille or Cafe 106 C BATTERY HISTORY de la Place for a dinner of milk soup, fried sausages,■eggs and vin. Of course stopping first at Margueritesfor an appetizer or so, and then on the way hack re-peating the appetizers—prohahly for the hreakfastnext morning. Picture the happiness and enthusiasm of the followers ofthe chase as they arise on the bright, clear morning of the hunt,filled with the anticipation of a gala day of sport across fieldand stream; picture their feelings of rare satisfaction told by thetwnnkle of the eye and the brisk rul)bing of the hands as they C BATTERY HISTORY lOT view with keen delight the sight of the beagle hounds, who,anxiously awaiting the pursuit are already eagerly romping andsniffing about the barn yard.
