English: Rooftop view showing the Civil War hospital, known as the Broad Street Hospital, on the 100 block of North Broad Street at the southeast corner of Cherry Street. Includes a row of several soldiers near a military band under the awning of the building; a small crowd of spectators; and a partial view of adjacent buildings on the 1300 block of Cherry Street. Building adorned with signage printed "General Hospital. U.S. Army." Hospital opened February 2, 1862 in an old Philadelphia and Reading Railway station. Hospital closed in January 1863 after the completion of Mower General Hospital in Chestnut Hill and reopened briefly following the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. albumen mounted on paper |
