Description
English: 'Jack and his Father meeting Sir Hercules' [at Greenwich Hospital]. Illustration for Marryat's 'Poor Jack' (1840)

'Poor Jack' (Tom Saunders), his Greenwich Pensioner father and his sister, Virginia, meeting Sir Hercules and Lady Hawkingtrefylyan, on the 'terrace' of Greenwich Hospital. In the background, left to right, are the Queen Anne Court, the present Trafalgar Quarters on Park Row (then Hospital offices) and the Dome of the Queen Mary Court. The print originally faced p. 140 in Ch. XX of Marryat's 'Poor Jack' (1840). Jack's father was previously coxswain to the impecunious baronet, Sir Hercules, when he commanded the 'Druid', his mother having been the snobbish Lady Hercules' 'lady's maid'.
