Title
(2) Roman samian dish fragment, possibly Dr 27 or Dr 33, with stamp - [AMAN?]ED
Description
English: Five Roman eathenware pottery vessel sherds - large unabraded sherds.

Five samian ware sherds: (1) One base sherd with stamp, from a Dr 18/31 bowl, late 1st-early 2nd century. Outwardly inclined walls, slight ridge internally at the junction of the base and the wall (and not externally), rouletted circle around the slightly convex base, stamp SACRI[NN?].M at the apex of the base. Numerous white flecks in the slightly pinkish fabric, probably southern Gaulish. Diameter of foot ring c.120mm, weight 111.8g. (2) One foot ring with flat base with stamp [AMAN?]ED at the centre. Probably from a Dr33 or Dr27 bowl. probably Central gaulish (from fabric). Possibly deliberately shaped and reused as a gaming counter. Diameter of foot ring 46mm, weight 19.3g. (3)Three joining base/body/rim sherds from a Dr31 bowl, 2nd century, central Gaulish. Dish with outwardly inclined walls and convex base with incised line circle. The apex of the base, where a stamp may have been, is missing. Roughly one quarter of the bowl survives. Glued together by finder. Rim diameter 190mm, foot ring diameter c.90mm. weight (total) 145.2g.

Four joining reduced-fired greyware sherds from a deep, straight sided, slightly outwardly inclined walled dish with plain everted rim, shallow incised zig-zag decoration on the outer wall (similar to the design on Black-Burnished Ware vessels), and shallow incised loose loops on the underside of the flat base, which has a slight ridge as the foot ring. The two rim sherds have been glued together by the finder, as have the two base sherds. A corner of one of the rim sherds joins to the base (not glued). Common non-crystalline dark grey and white inclusions, and sparse mica inclusions. Rim diameter c.250mm, base diameter c.150mm, height of vessel 70mm, rim sherds weight 104.2g, base sherds weight 110.7g (total 214.9g).
