12 Medieval key iron.JPG |

Description |
English: Medieval iron key. The stem is split into two with a rectangular cleft in the centre that widens towards the bit, leaving an upper and lower stem. The upper stem narrows towards a point (17mm long and 8.5mm wide) would have probably had a rectangular cross-section with a flat terminal, which has corroded into a narrow point. The lower stem has a rectangular cross-section (18mm long, 5mm deep, 10 mm wide) with the bit at the very end. The bit is 11mm long, 19mm deep and 12mm thick. When looking at the front of the bit, so that the bow is furthest away from the viewer three clefts on the right side and one large one in the middle of the left-hand side are evident; there is a possible cleft at the bottom on the left side. The upper and lower stems join towards the bow and the sides of the solid stem narrow inwards towards the bow. The bow has a sub-lozenge cross-section with a rounded inside edge (26mm diameter, 5mm thick, 6mm wide). The key is heavily corroded with blistering over the whole surface. Light orange colour. |
