Title
1582 Roman alloy nail cleaner.JPG
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy Roman nail cleaner with decorated knob head. Oval head in plan with a starburst pattern engraved on to the surface consisting of 12 lines emanating out from the centre. In plan the head is rectangular with curved sides. Just below that head are three recessed collars that run around the circumference of the shaft. The shaft is circular in cross section and narrows towards the tip, the last quarter of the shaft has been flattened out slightly and given a concave cross-section, there is a channel that runs down almost the entire length of the shaft. The very tip of the shaft is slightly truncated as a result of corrosion but appears to have been forked. It is 45mm long, 9mm wide and 6mm thick. The object is in good condition retaining its original patina.
