Description
English: A cast, copper alloy, sub rectangular, shoe or knee buckle, with a drilled frame to take a separate spindle, dating from c. 1660-1720. The buckle has moulded concave sides with a single diagonal groove on each side of the spindle holes. The centre of each outer loop carries three incised, transverse grooves. The spindle remains in place and carries a folded sheet stud pattern chape and a sheet copper alloy pin. The stud portion of the chape is pierced with a small central hole. The buckle has a dark brown patina. It is 27.1mm long, 17.2mm wide and 6.6mm thick. It weighs 3.78gm Reference: Whitehead, Buckles 1250-1800, pp. 99, No.624.
