Title |
17-18th C silver cufflinks |
||
Description |
English: A silver cufflink composed of two sheet circular button-like components with angled perimeters, linked with a silver-wire loop and now slightly distorted. The sheet parts are each stamped with a flaming heart pierced by two arrows saltirewise, all on a stippled field, and bear diagonal scratches across the face. The loop is stamped with a maker's mark which reads 'M*'.Weight: 1.9 grams Post-medieval buttons bearing this motif are relatively common finds, and several have been deemed old enough to qualify as Treasure in the past: see for example the Treasure Annual Report 2004, items 235, 237 and 238. This item however, displays a maker's mark which has proven untraceable. It is likely to be from the late 17th/early 18th century but it is impossible to say that it was made prior to 1706 (300 years prior to discovery). Therefore it fails to qualify as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996. [Text by Geoff Egan] |
