1703 Medieval lace chape.jpg |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy lace chape length 42mm, diameter 6mm, thickness <1mm, weight 2.55g. The chape is made of sheep copper alloy that has been wrapped around to form a cone, the edges of the sheet are butted together and soldered. There is a hole at the base where the chape would have been sown/riveted into place.
The artefact is in a very poor condition having suffered heavily from corrosion, almost all or the original surface is missing and there is a heavy encrusting of copper corrosion. These chapes were put on to the end of leather or textile laces to help not only protect the ends but also felicitate threading and act as a decorative addition to the clothing. The majority of the examples found come from 15th century contexts, but examples are found in illustrated texts as early as the 12th century such as that in the Winchester Psalter, and few examples found in 16th century (Egan, 1991, 281-286), suggesting a 1100-1540 date. |
