Title
1704 Medieval arrowhead.jpg
Description
English: Forged iron arrowhead length 68mm, width 30mm, thickness 12mm, weight 15.91g. The head of the arrow has a diamond cross-section, long barb extend down either side and are rectangular in cross-section with squared terminals, one of the barbs has been truncated, this is an old break.

The socket is circular in cross-section, the first fifth that emanates from the head is straight and solid, before it gently expands, this area is socketed. The whole of the surface is encrusted with corrosion, although the original shape is not distorted. This arrowhead is of a style called a broadhead, according to Jessop this type of arrowhead was absent from earlier assemblages and become popular by the 13th-14th century (1997, 4). The large barbs are designed to become embedded in the flesh of the target, therefore it is thought that these larger arrowheads were used predominately for hunting, while the bodkin style was used in warfare.
