12 E. J. BOWEN'S 1902 SEED MANUAL. The farmer who does not grow carrots for his horses and milch cows makes a great mistake. In nutritive qualities they stand at the head of ail roots. Our carrots for seed are selected with the greatest care; only smooth, true specimens are saved, and you can rely on our seed coming true to name.
Text Appearing After Image:
CARROTS. The Carrot is nutritious and healthful and deserves to be more extensively cultivated^ both for the table and stock feeding. ^ Sow as soon as the ground can be thoroughly prepared, in rows fifteen inches ' apart, and when well up, thin to from four to six inches apart, according to the kind you are growing. The seed germinates slowly, re- quiring sometimes three weeks for the young plants to appear. To get a start of the weeds, soak the seed a day or two in tepid water, and roll it in sand, plaster or wood ashes before sowing, or let the ground He several days after it is prepared for the seed, when the weeds can be killed. The soil should be rich and loose and it will pro- duce smoother carrots if it is manured the year previous. Sow three pounds to the acre, or one ounce to one hundred and fiftv feet of row. FRENCH FORCING. Earliest—best forcing variety. Tops small, finely divided. The reddish- orange colored roots are nearly round, with a groove about the crown, and when fully ma- tured they are about two inches in diameter, but should be used before they are full-grown, when they are tender and delicious Pkt., oc; oz., 10c; 2 oz., 15c; 14 lb., 30c; lb., $1.00.
