Title |
198 BERK-CEF805: Anglo-Saxon Strap End |
||
Description |
English: An early medieval copper alloy strap end, of Thomas's (2003) Class B Type 1. The strap end has a semi-circular cross section with one flared terminal where the strap would have been secured with two rivets (now missing). The terminal is of stylised zoomorphic design with nostrils and ears however this part is very worn. There are two sets of three transverse grooves decorating the strap end, one set by the flared terminal and the other above the zoomorphic terminal. This style of strap end was in use for a long period, and Thomas comments that the type was introduced in the later 8th or early 9th century and remained popular until the 11th. It is widely distributed in southern and south-east England. |
