Title
1st century Roman brooch
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece type brooch. The wings are complete and semicylindrical. Behind the head is a lug pierced with two circular perforations, which are now blocked with corrosion product. There appears to be a fragment of spring coil, badly corroded, held in one wing, otherwise the rest of the coil and pin shaft are entirely missing. Running from the head onto the bow is a well-moulded crest. The bow is complete except for some damage at the very tip of the foot. The bow is tapering, semicircular in section and presumably ended without a foot knob. The curled catchplate is mostly complete, with only a small fragment of the lower of the catchplate and curl missing. The catchplate is solid and grooved for the pin. The original surface remains but has been damaged on the lower portion of the bow and some of the catchplate. The brooch has been treated since discovery to halt further damage and corrosion and has a greeny brown patina with tiny patches of shiny bronze. Because of this treatment it is impossible to say when the damage occurred. It appears undecorated. The brooch has a surviving length of 35.92mm, is 19.6mm wide across the wings, 5.86mm wide across the bow, is 2.92mm thick and weighs 4.12g. Brooches of this type date from between 50-70AD. An example can be seen in Crummy 1983, figure 6, number 52.
