Title |
1st century Roman brooch side view |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ type two piece brooch. One wing on this brooch is entirely missing and one is complete. The wings were semicylindrical. Behind the head is a small knop that is the remains of a lug, that when complete would have had two perforations to hold the spring chord. The spring and pin are entirely missing. A pronounced crest runs from the head onto the bow. The bow and foot are triangular in section. The brooch is decorated with a raised rib that runs the entire length. The foot ends complete without a foot knob and is slightly damaged at its terminal. The curled catchplate is incomplete and it is impossible to tell whether it was solid or perforated. The patina of the object is orangey brown. It is 30.32mm long, 16.68mm wide across the head and surviving wing, 7.02mm wide across the bow, 3.9mm thick and weighs 4.49g. Brooches of this type date from between 50-70AD. A similar example can be seen in Crummy 1983, figure 6, number 52. |
