Title
1st century Roman brooch side view
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece brooch. The wings on this brooch are complete and semicylindrical with ‘capped’ ends. Behind the head is a lug with two circular perforations that would have held the spring chord. These are now blocked with fragments of the chord or corrosion product. The spring and pin are entirely missing. There is no crest running from the head onto the bow, as might be expected of this brooch type. The bow is flattened and subrectangular in section. The bow tapers towards the foot which ends complete without a foot knob. Interestingly at the bottom of the foot are two horizontal grooves as if to ‘suggest’ a foot knob. The curled catchplate is complete and has a triangular perforation. Both the wings and body of the brooch are plain. The patina of the object is dark green. The brooch is 53.62mm long, 20.96mm wide across the remains of the wings, 5.32mm wide across the bow, 2.42mm thick and weighs 6.05g. Brooches of this type date from between 50-70AD. A similar example can be seen in Hattatt 1985, figure 12, number 259. Hattatt makes the comment with this example that the suggestion of a foot knob is unusual in this type.
