English: 13 silver coins, all are official silver issued of the English royal mints and thus will be of good silver, mostly of the traditional sterling standard of c. 92.5% fine metal (the Second Coinage of Edward III was struck to a slightly lower standard, but still of good silver). The find contains coins struck through the first half of the 14th century, from the end of Edward I's reign and that of Edward II, and with coins of Edward III up to c. 1351/2. The coins are mostly pennies with two halfpennies and two groats (the coin of fourpence): groats were introduced to the English currency in 1351 as part of Edward III's Fourth Coinage. The coins would thus seem to belong to the very early days of the Fourth Coinage, since this involved a reduction in the weight of the penny and older coins were quickly clipped down to match the new standard. In this group most of the older pennies are still of the higher weight standard, which one would expect only in the very early days of the new system: this is a feature attested in a couple of large hoards of several hundred coins from the early 1350s. The coins in question are of good silver and would have been in circulation together in the very early 1350s and are very likely to represent a single deposit of material made c. 1351/2.
