Description
English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item A.1 Socketed Axe; Plainseau

Complete cast copper alloy socketed axehead. There is a wide upper mouth moulding with a narrower moulding below. The top of the side loop is located over the lower mouth moulding. The body sides are slightly concave, flaring out at the blade end. There are prominent casting seams on both sides, and on the side loop. The body is rectangular in section, and the mouth has rounded corners. There is damage to the cutting edge. There is some corroded fragments of copper alloy at the socket end. The axe has cast decoration in the form of two raised rings over the side edges, and wrapping over the front and back faces, giving an 'egg-timer' impression on the front and back faces.
