Title
2010 T39 Anglo-Saxon silver buckle
Description
English: Silver gilt early Anglo-Saxon D-shaped buckle. The outside and inside edges are bevelled, creating a sub-triangular cross-section. The outside edge is highly decorated; this decoration runs around the whole of the frame, and is divided into three panels. The panel in the lower half is the longest and runs around the whole frame. It consists of alternating triangles which are slightly recessed in the centre. The top half consists of two panels; each contains a line of simple twist interlace of two strands with niello inlay in the centre. These two panels are divided in the centre by a swastika which is also inlaid with niello. A recessed line inlaid with niello marks the division between each individual triangle and the panels. The underside of the buckle frame has a steep bevel.

This buckle has the swastika motif that is commonly found on Anglo-Saxon burial urns from East Anglia and Lincolnshire. It also bears many stylistic similarities with an example found at Alton, Hampshire. This buckle, thought to be one of the best examples of its type outside of Sutton Hoo, formed part of a grave assemblage for a high status male warrior. It is probable, as in the Alton example, that this buckle was originally accompanied by an ornate triangular buckle plate.
