Title
205 BERK-DE5758: Fragment of French Jetton
Description
English: An incomplete and worn copper alloy jetton of Charles V (1364-1380 AD) or Charles VI (1380-1422), struck in Tournai, France between 1373 and 1415. The obverse depicts the Chatel Tournois accosted with an unclear symbol to one side. The obverse legend is unclear. The reverse depicts a triple stranded straight cross fleuretty within a 4 arched tressure. The reverse legend probably reads +AVE. This style of provinical issue French jettons is considered to date to between 1373 and 1415, although the Chatel Tournois style design was a popular one and it continued to appear on both 15th Century royal jettons and on stock issues that were mass produced, mainly at Tournai (Tours).
