Title
2266 Roman Possible knife handle.jpg
Description
English: A fragment of an unidentified object, probably dating to the Roman period, between AD 43 – 410 (length: 33mm; width: 8mm; thickness: 4.5mm; weight: 3.99g). This artefact is sub triangular in plan and rectangular in section. The top half of the broken fragment is hollow and consists of two prongs to either side joined together by separately attached copper alloy strips. Along the outside edge of these prongs, there are sets of two or three parallel and horizontal incised lines. The hollow cavity (length: 14.5mm; width: 4.5mm) is present from the top of the broken artefact and finishes 18.5mm from the bottom tip. The decoration on the lower half of the artefact consists of three sets of moulded and incised decoration before the tip of the artefact terminates with an iron pin of some sort, which protrudes out slightly from the base. The unidentified object appears to be a probable strap end at first glance but the use/ function of an iron pin/ tip at the end of the artefact makes the artefact’s identify uncertain. The object is in a worn but fair condition with a light green/ grey patina.
