Title
235 BERK-F70B60: Imitation of 13th Century Long Cross Penny
Description
English: An incomplete medieval lead alloy token, apparently in imitation of a short cross penny. This could suggest a date as early as the late 12th century for this object. The obverse side of the coin may bear the image of a pentagon/star or possibly the letter A, however as the token is incomplete it is hard to discern. Tokens of the 12th and 13th century may be associated with monasteries (Fletcher 2005:22); some early tokens from the Thames foreshore bear the letter A and it is possible that it could be the first letter in the prayer 'Ave Maria' (ibid.), however there are no documentary sources to confirm or deny this. If this token is actually imitating a coin then one would have expected a crowned bust on the obverse, however the token may only be alluding to the coin and not intentionally copying one in order to decieve. The token has been cut in half, and one wonders if this was then meant to function in a similar way to a cut silver coin of the period. An unusual and intriguing find.
