Title
3018 Barrel tap and key
Description
English: Cast copper alloy tap with a flat openwork trefoil head to the handle. The perforations are large and circular, and below there is a short flat bar which links the handle to the stem. This bears a maker's mark on one side of the key that shows a profile face looking left, with a hooked nose, within a crescent curving around the back of the head. The key fits into a socket which is hexagonally faceted externally. To one side of the socket, the spigot or pipe which brought liquid into the tap is now missing; the curved spout (taking liquid out of the tap) is rectangular in cross-section (7mm wide, 9mm high) with a rectangular aperture and a projection at the top of the curve.

The tap is 44mm long and 12mm high. The handle is 49mm high, 24mm wide and 2mm thick. Overall it weighs 23.19g.

Read shows a similar tap (1995, 97, No.603), which he dates to the 15th and 16th centuries, but excavated examples from Amsterdam are all dated to the early post-medieval period (Baart 1977, 352-6).
