621 lace tag.JPG |
||
Description |
English: Lace tag/chape is made of sheep copper alloy that has been wrapped around to form a cone, the ends form an overlapping seam and narrows down to a natural point. Neither the wide or narrow terminal ends have been folded inwards and finished off. There are no rivet holes.
The artefact is in a poor condition with a dark brown pitted surface, there are lighter green patches where the surface has corroded. Length 20mm, diameter 8mm, thickness <1mmThese were put on to the end of leather or textile laces to help not only protect the ends but also felicitate threading and act as a decorative addition to the clothing. The majority of the examples found come from 15th century contexts, but examples are found in illustrated texts as early as the 12th century such as that in the Winchester Psalter, and few examples found in 16th century (Egan, 1991, 281-286), suggesting a 1100-1540 date. Owing to the size of this example, it is most probable that yhis was mounted on a leather thread. |
