624 knife handle plate.JPG |

Description |
English: Knife handle fragment. Length 25mm, width 10mm narrowing to 7mm at the base, thickness 1mm. The artefacts is trapezoid in plan with a rectangular hole (3mm by 2mm) one third of the way down its length, the hole is dished slightly where it has been punched through the plate. There is an incised diamond decoration around the hole, this is the only decoration on the plate. The artefact is in a poor condition with corrosion stripping of most of the original surface resulting is a light green, slightly powdery surface. This is a sheet copper alloy plate that would have been the back plate of a tanged knife handle. There would have been an organic handle, probably bone or wood mounted on a knife tang, that had a copper alloy plate on the front and back that formed the handle. Tanged knifes that have a copper alloy plate one either side of the handle are more common in the 12th-14th century, which is the probable date for this object. |
