Title
718 Medieval Barrel lock terminal with key hole.JPG
Description
English: Hollow hexagonal barrel padlock 41mm long, 9mm wide, 19mm high, weight 8.86g, made of cast copper alloy. The artefact is a long hollow hexagonal tube, there is a Square slot (5mm by 5mm) removed from the topside of one of the terminals, below which is a vertical bar that separates this end of the tub into two hollow spaces.
‘T’ shaped aperture on the terminal of the other end, which is where the key would fit. Above the aperture on the top of the barrel is a rectangular arm (9mm high, 7mm long, 1mm thick). This arm would have held a bar but this has been broken, this is an old break. There is a circular hole at the base of the arm on the right hand side.
There are two sets of parallel grooved lines at either end of the barrel that run around its circumference. With further decoration comprises of a double wavy line on each panel of the tube.
Dark green patina over much of the surface, there are also patches of lighter green where the original surface has corroded away.
Artefacts such as this one have been found at York and have been dated to the 12th – 14th century one in particular is very similar 12597 and has been recorded as coming out of a Late 12th century context (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2866-2871). Nevertheless, these types of locks are much more common in the 13th – 14th centuries, therefore the overall date of this artefact is 12th-14th century.
