Title
8D5368 Roman knife pommel
Description
English: A full relief model of an animal head and neck. The neck is hollow and contains iron - perhaps suggesting a knife pommel. The neck also tapers from the head, which suggests that it was never attached to a complete animal form. The base of the neck is broken with a flat flange on the back edge, reminiscent of a broken hinge lug. The animal seems to to be a member of the horse family. Although the face is rather short, the raised ridge down the back of the neck appears to be a mane. There is a distinct horizontal, incised line running from the mouth, round to the base of the mane. This is probably casting flange rather than a representation of bridle straps.
