English: Probable Blade

Possible late Palaeolithic-probable early Mesolithic.

Length 15mm, width 22.5mm, thickness 4.8mm.



Possibly the top section of a early Mesolithic blade.  There are two arrises emanating from each corner at the top, both are angled toward the centre, the right arrise curves inwards at a shallower than the left.  Two large flake scars in the centre, removed from the top.  Retouch blade on both sides, the right blade is pressure flaked from the ventral (reverse), while the left blade id pressure flaked from the dorsal (obverse).  Single flake removed from the ventral with bulb of percussion at the top.



Very light grey patina with light grey mottling throughout.

The blade is broken part of the way down, perhaps through use or by natural means, but it was not knapped and it is likely that the artefact originally much longer. A late Palaeolithic date should not be ruled out, but a late Mesolithic date is much more likely.
