Title
A 13th/ 14th century key with a lozenge-shaped bow.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy key with a lozenge-shaped bow (length: 23mm; width:28mm), comprised of a quatrefoil framework with a collar just below. There is a double loop above the framework which has been integrally cast with the rest of the key. The loop protrudes outwards from both sides by approximately 3mm, possibly for attachment purposes. The key has a hollow oval-sectioned shank (length: 58mm) with the bottom of the shank and part of the bit broken. The overall patina is of a dark brown colour and is in a good state of preservation.
Parallels of this key have been found in a 14th century context (Read, 2001). The style of a lozenge bow appears throughout the 13th/ 14th century (Mills, 1999).
