Title |
A 1st/ 2nd century 'button and loop' clothes fastener. |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy button and loop fastener of Wild's Class Vd. It has a circular head and possible remains of a triangular loop (length: 32.8mm; diameter of circular head: 20mm; thickness of circular head: 3mm; weight: 9.48g). The circular head has an off-centre indented border approximately 4mm from the outside edge, with what appears to be a small circular fragment of blue glass in the middle (diameter: 2mm). Part of the outside edge of the circular head has broken off, and there are substantial amounts of bronze disease here as well as across the front of the head. There are remains of gilding on small areas of the head. The loop protruding from below the head has been broken off where the feature would have separated into two forks. A break that has been recently mended appears below the fork. Overall, the fastener is in a a poor condition with a general spread of corrosion and pockets of bronze disease. The artefact has a light green/ brown patina. A similar example was found during excavations at South Shields Roman Fort (Allason-Jones & Miket, 1984, pages 185-7, Ref no 584). Other examples have been dated to the 1st and 2nd century AD. |
