ricahas known. George Whitefield was born in the BullInn, at Gloucester, England, December 16,1714. He acquired the rudiments of learn-ing in St. Marys grammar school. Laterhe attended O.xford University for a time,where he became intimate with the OxfordMethodists, and resolved to devote himselfto the ministry. He was ordained in theGloucester Cathedral June 20, 1S36, andthe following day preached his first sermonin the same church. On that day therecommenced a new era in Whitefields life.He went to London and began to preach atBishopsgate church, his fame soon spread-ing over the city, and shortly he was en-gaged four times on a single Sunday in ad-dressing audiences of enormous magnitude,and he preached in various parts of his nativecountry, tiie people crowding in multitudesto hear him and hanging upon the rails andrafters of the churches and approaches there-to.
