But the strangestthing about it was, that from the crownof its head there sprang a bright clear jet oflight, by which all this was visible ; andwhich was doubtless the occasion of itsusing, in its duller moments, a great ex-tinguisher for a cap, which it now held underits arm. Even this, though, when Scrooge looked atit with increasing steadiness, was 7iot itsstrangest quality. For as its belt sparkledand glittered now in one part and now inanother, and what was light one instant, atanother time was dark, so the figure itselffluctuated in its distinctness : being now athing with one arm, now with one leg, nowwith twenty legs, now a pair of legs withouta head, now a head without a body : ofwhich dissolving parts, no outline would bevisible in the dense gloom wherein they 41

The voice was soft and gentle. Singu-larly low, as if instead of being so close besidehim, it were at a distance. Who, and what are you.? Scroogedemanded. I am the Ghost of Christmas Past. Long past.? inquired Scrooge : observ-ant of its dwarfish stature. No. Your past. Perhaps, Scrooge could not have told any-body why, if anybody could have asked him ;but he had a special desire to see the Spirit inhis cap ; and begged him to be covered. What! exclaimed the Ghost, wouldyou so soon put out, with worldly hands, thelight 1 give ?
