The compound in the jug beingtasted, and considered perfect, apples andoranges were put upon the table, and ashovel-full of chestnuts on the fire. Then allthe Cratchit family drew round the hearth, inwhat Bob Cratchit called a circle, meaninghalf a one ; and at Bob Cratchits elbow stoodthe family display of glass. Two tumblers,and a custard-cup without a handle. These held the hot stuff from the jug, how-ever, as well as golden goblets would havedone ; and Bob served it out with beam-ing looks, while the chestnuts on the firesputtered and cracked noisily.
