s, files, scales,weights, and refuse iron of all kinds. Secretsthat few would like to scrutinise were bredand hidden in mountains of unseemly rags,masses of corrupted fat, and sepulchres ofbones. Sitting in among the wares he dealtin, by a charcoal-stove, made of old bricks,was a grey-haired rascal, nearly seventy yearsof age ; who had screened himself from the 122 H (Tbristmas Carol cold air without, by a frousy curtaining ofmiscellaneous tatters, hung upon a line ; andsmoked his pipe inall the luxury of calmretirement. Scrooge and thePhantom came intothe presence of thisman, just as a wo-man with a heavybundle slunk into theshop. But she hadscarcely entered,when another wo-man, similarly laden,came in too; and shewas closely followedby a man in fadedblack, who was noless startled by thesight of them, thanthey had been upon•the recognition of each other. After a short period of blank as-tonishment, in which the old man with thepipe had joined them, they all three burst intoa laugh.
