The Spirit signed to him to listen to thetwo apprentices, who were pouring out theirhearts in praise of Fezziwig ; and when hehad done so, said : ** Why ! Is it not? He has spent but afew pounds of your mortal money : three orfour, perhaps. Is that so much that he de-serves this praise ? It isnt that, said Scrooge, heated bythe remark, and speaking unconsciously likehis former, not his latter, self. It is nt that.Spirit. He has the power to render us happyor unhappy ; to make our service light orburdensome ; a pleasure or a toil. Say thathis power lies in words and looks ; in thingsso slight and insignificant that it is impossi-ble to add and count em up : what then ?The happiness he gives, is quite asgreat as if it cost a fortune. He felt the Spirits glance, and stopped. What is the matter ? asked the Ghost. Nothing particular, said Scrooge. Something, I think .^ the Ghost insisted
