Description
English: A figure from the central section of the http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/sc-27856-william-gladstone-memorial-coates-crescen (1917) designed by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Pittendrigh_Macgillivray

It commemorates the 19th Century Liberal politician http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Ewart_Gladstone who was Prime Minister of Britain four times.
Gladstone was M.P. for Midlothian for 15 years. Another local connection was his father's family, who were from Leith.

It is now sited at Coates Crescent Gardens in Edinburgh. Between 1917 and 1955 it was erected in St Andrew Square. It was unveiled by local aristocrat, the Earl of Rosebery, who had also been Prime Minister of Britain. It is now at its intended location, but in 1917, the residents of Coates Crescent Garden vehemently objected to the statue being put there.
