A Fragment of Medieval purse bar, 1450-1550.
Description
English: A fragment of a medieval, copper alloy purse bar, with suspension loop. The purse bar has a swivelling circular suspension loop with a decorated collar. The loop attaches to the central block by a central shank with a rounded rove securing it below. The central block is rectangular The arms are narrow where the frame would have attached. Both terminate in old breaks. The bar is is 41.8mm long, 21.7 wide, and 3.9mm thick. It weighs 14.2. Similar examples on the PAS database are YORYM-E77B53, BUC-736EE8 and NCL-94BCC8. This bar appears to be a type B in Ward Perkins, 1940, Museum on London Medieval Catalogue, though not enough survives to be sure of its sub classification. Purses of this style date from 1450 - 1550.
