Title
A Post medieval silver buckle
Description
English: An incomplete, probably symmetrical, open-work silver buckle decorated with lion masks. The buckle is double looped although the central bar is missing. The frame is D shaped in section. There would have been lion masks at four points on the frame, either side of the bar and on the outer edge of the frame. Two straight bars link the side of the frame with the lion mask the narrower end of the frame. The lions on the sides of the frame have bifid decoration either side of them. A slightly similar buckle can be seen in Whitehead (1996 p99 no 623) which he dates to 1660 -1720

Discussion:

In terms of age, assuming it dates from the earlier end of the date range stated, and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
