Title |
A Roman Colchester Brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy Roman brooch, related to the simple one-piece (Nauheim derivative) type, dating from AD 25-100. The fabric of the brooch is quite thin and has suffered some damage, now being bent out of shape. The bow is very narrow at the foot, wider in the middle and then tapers to the spring. It is not decorated, but there are two short, rectangular projections, one on each side of the bow immediately before it begins to curve. There is also a short rectangular extension, of the same size as those to the sides, projecting forwards from the foot of the bow at right angles to the plane of the bow itself. At the head the metal is drawn out into a slender sprung pin. Only one turn of the spring remains; the rest is missing. The catch plate remains and is complete. The brooch has been subjected to excessive cleaning and no patina is visible. It is 31.5mm long, 7.8mm wide and 19.1mm thick. It weighs 3.45gm. |
