Title
A Roman Plate Brooch
Description
English: A cast copper alloy, Roman plate brooch dating from AD 100 - 300. The brooch is oval in shape with a central, raised cell that once contained a gem intaglio or glass setting of some sort but which is now missing. The brooch is decorated with a series of concentric ridges, between which are small, punched designs. Immediately adjecent to the central cell is a small step that is decorated with a series of small, punched dots. There is then a flat area decorated with a series of small, punched crescents before a narrow, ropework ridge and a higher, plain ridge, separated by a V shaped groove. Finally, between this last ridge and the raised outer rim of the brooch is a decoration of saltires in low relief. The whole of the brooch is gilded and much of this gilding remains. The reverse of the brooch carries a catch plate, now bent double, and a single sub-rectangular lug for the pin. The pin lug is pierced and the piercing contains the remains of a ferrous pin; the remainder of the pin is missing. The brooch is 40.1mm long, 31.4mm wide and 9.3mm thick. It weighs 20.66gm.

Similar brooches are illustrated in Hattat, 2000, A Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, figures 223 and 224 and also in Mackreth, 2011, Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, volume 2, plate 107, numbers 10871 and 10892.
