Title
A Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy Roman brooch of Dragonesque type dating from AD 75 - 175. The brooch is made from a piece of sheet metal and has very long and slender necks and a pointed oval body forming an S shape. One neck is missing and the head on the surviving neck is not complete. The decoration is very simple and consists of five incised lines running diagonally across the body. This brooch is an example of Mackreth's Type 1 or 2 (page 186 ff in Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain) which are more common in Yorkshire and which are thought to be perhaps earlier than the enamelled examples. Parallels for sheet dragonesque brooches on the PAS database include SWYOR-1D30E4, SWYOR-74C407 and YORYM-FDC625.

The brooch is 58.9mm long, 18.9mm wide and 2.2mm thick. 5.21g. The pin is missing.
