Title
a Roman plate brooch
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman plate brooch dating from 200-350AD. The brooch is oval in shape. There is a smaller, central oval delineated by a raised ridge; this probably contained an intaglio which is now missing. The space between the inner oval and the rim of the brooch contained enamel, which was probably blue. The pin mount and part of the catch plate remain on the reverse. A fragment of a ferrous spring remains in the pin mount; the rest of the pin is missing. The brooch has a light green patina. It is 26.9mm long, 22.2mm wide and 6.3mm thick. It weighs 5.96gm. A similar example is illustrated in Hattat, Visual Catalogue, figure 223, number 1207.
