rancis Nichols,a man eminent in the community and its first mili-tary officer; one of the duties of Sergeant Nicholswas to train the men and exercise them in militarydiscipline. John Peat (or Peet), who was probably among theearliest comers, was the first sexton of the meeting-house. It was the duty of Goodman Peake toring the church bell and to take care of boys whowere unruly during worship. As he also rang thecurfew bell at nine of the clock every evening,he could hardly have been very popular with theyoung people. Moses Wheeler, who was born in England in 1598,was one of the first grantees of land in Stratford.His trade was that of shipwright ; but when a ferryover the Housatonic River was at an early dayestablished, he became its first lessee. This ferrywas an important one, inasmuch as it formed a linkin the post-road between New York and Boston. ^ The facts given in the following biographical sketchesare taken from Rev. MOSES WHEELER S COURT CUPBOARD, MADE DURING THE LATTER HALFOF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY Owned by Mrs. Timothy Dwight, New Haven The Connecticut Pioneer Its charges were fixed by a law which read, Ferried Stratfordover for one half-penny per person, two-pence perhorse or beast, — not a large enough charge, onewould think, to enable any one to amass a fortune,and yet enough to induce at least three generationsof Wheelers to continue to lease and operate theferry during a period of about a century.^ MosesWheeler died in 1698, when one hundred years old,and his gravestone is perfectly legible even now inthe old burying-ground at Stratford. Joseph Hawley owned a home lot in Stratford in1650 or earlier. He was a shipping merchant andone of the most prominent business men of the town ;he both built and owned ships, made importantpurchases of land from the Indians, and was fre-quently chosen one of the two representatives sentby Stratford to the Connecticut General Assembly.He was also the ta
