for fifty years. Mr. Rush had his coat of armsengraved upon it. He and Webster, it has been said, wereintimate friends, and the former, knowing Webster covetedit, offered to sell it to him. Some of Websters friends,knowing this, bought it and presented it to him, and had hisname inscribed upon the pieces. After Websters death,October 24,1852, the Marshfield Club, consisting of sometwelve members of the Somerset Club, purchased a largepart of the service and presented it to the Club. A ladies restaurant was also constructed, with a separateentrance, on the lower floor of the western bow. In 1872,when the Club first occupied their new premises, all sup-plies (such as coal, ice, provisions) and ashes, were carriedthrough a passage from the rear of No. 43 Beacon to SpruceStreet. Complaint having been made to the SupremeCourt that although the estate No. 43 owned a right ofway to Spruce Street, estate No. 42 had no such right, there-fore the Supreme Court granted an injunction against its

It thus became necessary to builda tunnel or subway under the house from Beacon Street tothe rear of the Club, otherwise everything must have beencarried through the front doors. During his occupancy of the mansion many distinguishedmen were entertained in it by Mr. Sears, among othersDaniel Webster, Rufus Choate, Prescott, Everett, Motley,and often, before the Civil War, gentlemen from the South. In 1896 the adjoining house, 41 Beacon Street, formerlyoccupied by William Amory, Esq., was purchased by theClub and annexed. Its site was once the courtyard of theSears estate. At the opening of the Club house, April 30, 1872, a re-ception was given to ladies, and its rooms were beautifullydecorated with flowers. During the Peace Jubilee in 1872, a notable concertwas given in the courtyard by the band of the EnglishGrenadier Guards under the leadership of the well-knownDan Godfrey.
