HONOR TO THEIR VALOR SAYSFRANCES PREMIER OF AMERICANS To The Stars and Stripes: Last September, I said to several of yourmagnificent soldiers whose guest I was: Youare going to be called upon to make a greateffort and to fulfill it, perhaps, at a cost ofyour life. We can feel only gratitude andfriendship for you who have come from afar tohelp us. MA.fcu-sTCWtfSCM- 32 Rue Taitbout, last home of The Stars and Stripes. The Funny Bone of the A. E. F. The Kansas City Journal, in a review of thefirst copy of The Stars and Stripes broughtto the attention of the editor wrote: There is a significant abundance of funnystuff, little jests and jingles, jokes and quips, which might not sell to the American funnymagazines, but which testify eloquently to theAmerican soldiers lightheadedness, as well as to the necessity of laughing at a time whentears would be more natural. To laugh as one stands on the brink of helland gazes down into the pit of torture andsuffering does not betoken indifference, butquite the reverse. The preservation of reasonand of the sublime purpose which animates themen in khaki demand these laughs which maskthe righteous curses that are directed towardthe barbarous enemy. 30 A Brief History of the Stars and Stripes THE CURTAIN! QUICK!!! Corporal: Say, Sarge, in what state would aman be if he fell into the river Seine?S
