Title
A casket key dating to the 12th-14th centuries.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy casket key (overall length: 37mm; width: 17mm) comprising of a small hooped circular head (diameter: 14mm), a shank which is slightly hollow at the end (length: 21mm) and a simple bit which protrudes out from the shank in a 'I' shape.
The key has a smooth grey patina and is generally in good condition. This type of casket key would have been used in chests and cabinets. Similar examples have been dated to the late 12th-early 14th centuries (Read, 2001, page 72, Ref Nos 544-552).
