Title
A cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch, dating to the 1st/ 2nd century AD.
Description
English: An incomplete trumpet brooch (length: 49.8mm; width (at head): 11.5mm; thickness/ depth: 27.2mm; weight: 8.65g). The head of the brooch is slightly splayed and open with the central lug still attached at the back. The top of the bow is highly arched and becomes slightly more narrow before reaching a moulding with three worn transverse ridges. The protruding button beneath the ridges has short longitudinal grooves. These seem to contain possible remains of red enamel, particularly on the left side. The mouldings are not continuous and only occur on the front of the brooch. A further three transverse ridges appear below the button. The brooch then becomes more narrow towards the slightly upturned foot. There is no spring mechanism or pin remaining, but most of the catchplate is still intact.

Overall, the condition of the brooch is poor. There is generally large amounts of corrosion, particularly at the head and the lower part of the bow towards the foot. The brooch has a dark brown patina.

This trumpet brooch can be associated with those characterised as the 'Chester and allied' type which cover 75% of the Lower Severn and nearby counties (Hattatt, 1987, 127). A similar example has been found at Lambourn, Berkshire (Hattatt, 1985, pages 108 & 111, fig 45, No 438 B).

Trumpet brooches are dated from the late 1st-late 2nd century AD.
