r and lived withLa-ban a long time, for he was in love with Ra-chel and told La-ban he would work for himsev-en years if he would give him Ra-chel to behis wife. La-ban said he would do this, but hedid not keep his word, for at the end of the sev-enyears he told Ja-cob he must take Le-ah for hiswife, as she was born first and the rule of thatland was th^t the girl who was born first mustwed first. Ja-cob did not love Le-ah, but he hadto make her his wife and then work just as longmore for Ra-chel, whom he loved with all hisheart. (In those days and in that land menmight have more than one wife at a time, but inthese days and in this land they may have butone.) Ja-cob had a hard life with La-ban, who wasnot kind to him, so he made up his mind to goback to the land of Ca-naan, with his wives andhis flocks and herds. He sent some of his menon in front with gifts for E-sau, for, though it hadbeen a long time since he fled from him, he stillfelt a fear that E-sau might wish to kill him, so

But hehad naught to fear, for time had made such achange in both men that when at last they metthey were good friends once more. The trip from Ha-ran back to Ja-cobs oldhome was a long one, and on the way Ra-chelfell sick and died, which was a great grief toJa-cob. He was now an old man and hadtwelve sons. Jo-seph was the best one, and Ja-cob loved him most and gave him a fine coat,which made the rest hate him and want to getrid of him. At this time Jo-seph had two strangedreams—in the first one he thought he and hisbroth-ers were at work in the field and that asthey bound sheaves his sheaf stood up straightwhile the sheaves of his broth-ers bowed downto it. In the next dream he thought the sun,moon, and stars bowed down to him; now hisbroth-ers thought these dreams meant that theyshould bow down to Jo-seph, so they were fullof spite and they hated him more
