A complete Post Medieval cast copper alloy openwork button, late 18th century. |

Description |
English: A complete Post Medieval cast copper alloy openwork button, late 18th century. The large button is circular in plan and has been cast with an openwork pattern and an internal attachment loop. The ostentatious button consists of a central circular disc, surrounded by vertical ovals arranged in a ring, creating openwork wedges, and topped with a solid border. The border has been decorated with incised rays, and alternate ovals contain impressed S-shaped petals. The central disc has two incised rings, one inside the other, and in the centre a sexfoil flower with wavy tendrils all defined in punched pellets. The reverse of the button is undecorated but has a prominent central casting seam running across it. Projecting from the centre of the reverse is the internally-cast attachment loop. The entire button has a bright yellow-gold patina with patches of dark discolouration.
Dimensions: thickness: 1.14mm; diameter: 36.11mm; weight: 7.93g. Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context. |
