Title |
A complete Post Medieval iron rotary key (17th century). |
||
Description |
English: A complete Post Medieval iron rotary key (17th century). The key has an oval-sectioned kidney-shaped bow with an inward-projecting pointed knop from the centre of the stem. The solid stem widens as it travels away from the bow, graduating to a thick octagonal-section in the centre, approximately 11.5mm in diameter. The key has no collar. At the bit, the stem steps down into a more slender circular-section. The symmetrical bit remains complete and has sub-cruciform warding with a pair of clefts close to the stem. The key has some corroding but is only slightly worn and is generally very fine. Egan (2005) records a similar, incomplete key, p. 74 ref. 319, from a context securely dated to 1550-1600 AD.
Dimensions: length: 142.48mm; width: 49.54mm; thickness: 7.3mm; diameter: 11.5mm; weight: 99.27g. Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context Reference: Egan, G. 2005. Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition. MoLAS Monograph 19.
